A Plain-English Guide

What is Functional Patterns?

Functional Patterns (FP) is a training system built around how the human body is actually designed to move. Not how a machine in a gym says it should move, not how a yoga shape says it should move — how your structure, evolved over millions of years, is engineered to stand, walk, run and throw. The system is built from the ground up around human biomechanics rather than borrowed from a sport, a rehab protocol, or a fitness trend.

The Problem

Why most training fails the human body

Most gyms, classes and rehab plans treat the body as a collection of separate parts — bigger biceps here, a stronger core there, more flexible hamstrings somewhere else. That approach can look impressive in a mirror, but it usually ignores how those parts are supposed to work together. Over time, the imbalances pile up: tight hips, a sore lower back, one shoulder higher than the other, knees that ache when you run, a neck that never quite switches off.

FP starts from a different question: not "what exercise should I do today?" but "what is the human body actually built to do, and how do we restore that?"

The Philosophy

Built around human physiology — not borrowed from a sport

Functional Patterns was developed by Naudi Aguilar over more than a decade of clinical work, drawing on biomechanics, evolutionary biology, anatomy and fascial science. The core idea is simple: humans are bipedal, contralateral, rotational throwers. Everything we are good at — hunting, walking long distances, sprinting, throwing — comes from that template.

The FP training methodology is built entirely around this template, instead of being inherited from bodybuilding, powerlifting, Pilates, yoga or physiotherapy. It respects human physiology by starting with integrated movement, rather than bolting "functional" exercises onto a system designed for something else.

The Four Patterns

The movements your body is engineered around

01

Standing

A balanced, symmetrical structure under gravity — the foundation every other movement is built on.

02

Walking

Reciprocal, contralateral motion that should decompress the spine and load the body evenly, not grind it down.

03

Running

An efficient elastic stride that uses the connective tissue system instead of forcing it through joints.

04

Throwing

Rotational power expressed through the whole body — the highest expression of human movement.

Every FP session is ultimately about making these four patterns cleaner, more symmetrical and more powerful. Everything else — strength work, myofascial release, corrective drills — exists to serve them.

The Methodology

How an FP programme actually works

1. Assess the structure. We look at how you stand, walk and breathe. Posture is read in 3D — front, side and back — to map where you are compensating and why.

2. Release what is locked. Targeted myofascial release work (MFR) unwinds the tissues that are pulling you out of alignment, so the corrective work that follows can actually take hold.

3. Re-pattern the movement. Specific corrective exercises teach your nervous system how to organise itself around a balanced midline — ribs over pelvis, head over ribs, weight evenly through both feet.

4. Build strength on top of structure. Once the structure is sound, we load it. Strength work is then reinforcing good mechanics instead of grinding bad ones deeper.

5. Express it in gait and rotation. The end goal is a body that walks, runs and rotates without pain — for life, not just for a session.

Why It Works

Why FP works when other things haven't

If you have been through physio, massage, Pilates, CrossFit, yoga or "just stretching more" and the same pain keeps coming back, it is almost always because the underlying structure was never addressed. You can stretch a muscle that is tight for a reason all day long — it will tighten back up by the evening, because your structure is still asking it to.

FP works because it changes the structure itself. By restoring symmetry, retraining gait and loading the body in patterns it is built for, the reasons for the pain quietly go away. Posture improves. Movement gets easier. Strength, fitness and longevity follow naturally — not as separate goals, but as side effects of a body that finally moves the way it was designed to.

Who It's For

Who benefits most from FP

Office workers with chronic back, neck or hip pain. Runners and lifters whose injuries keep coming back. Parents who want to keep up with their kids without paying for it the next day. Athletes chasing the last 10% of performance. Anyone in their 30s, 40s, 50s and beyond who wants to be strong, mobile and pain-free for the next forty years — not just the next forty days.
